Don’t Tap the Glass and Other Things You Shouldn’t Do With Aquariums
Many people want to own an aquarium of there own, however, they simply don’t know all the ins and outs of it. Sometimes they know what to look for and what they need and this is great. But there still is a problem and that is most simply don’t know what not to do when dealing with an aquarium.
Feeding and fish care is a major concern particularly for beginners. Overfeeding is one of the easiest things to do and it can lead to a couple problems. Firstly, fish can get fat like other organisms. They typically don’t but it can be an issue. Secondly, and more importantly, is the pollution and waste that extra food causes. If uneaten, it just ends up floating in the water and may undertake chemical reactions that may make an unhealthy living place for your fish. To combat this clean the tank a few minutes after feeding if it isn’t all eaten up.
Proper accessory use is also a must that many can find themselves screwing up. Having one uber pump, heater or whatever may be a cheap option but it can be deadly if the thing breaks. If not replaced in time the entire aquarium may be compromised and everything may get lost. Having two smaller vital accessories of the same type is good in order to have a backup.
When changing water don’t do a complete (100%) exchange. It’s best for the fish to adapt to the newer water while maintaining the previous bacteria and such that have been present in the past. Also be careful with tap water. Often it has chlorine and other chemicals that may be harmful to the fish or the machinery. It is best to clean things, such as the filter, in aquarium water for this very same reason.
Lastly, don’t overstock the aquarium. This is very easy to do if you don’t have any concept for the living space for fish. Remember they are very territorial and above and beyond that may need room to swim around, feed and live in general.
